good surface is a printing service for graphic designers who care about the environment.

We make available unused paper surfaces from print shop production.

So they become your graphic design project instead of waste.

Did we say printing on unused surfaces is also cheaper than regular printing?

unused paper surfaces

Print shops use fixed-format paper sheets for their production. But what if the things they need to print are smaller than this format? What if they use A4 sheets but they need to print only a 5 × 8 cm business card? What happens to the unused paper surface?

The answer is optimisation, which means putting as many projects on the same sheet as possible. However, optimisation is not always optimal, and often a lot of unused surface remains and ends up in the trash.

good surface aims at reducing unused paper surfaces, therefore reducing waste. We ask print shops to tell us about unused paper surfaces in their regular production, so we can advertise them and make them available for your projects.

We only work with guaranteed print shops, so your project on an unused paper surface has the same high printing standard of a regular print.

graphic design project

As a graphic designer you need to choose which printing service best suits your project. In making this choice you may consider environmental concerns. good surface is a printing service that scores greatly in that respect.

There is a trade-off though, as you may feel that unused surfaces limit your options in terms of available size and printing technique. We are graphic designers ourselves, we understand the worry. However, here are some things to think about:

Fixed sizes are already there.
Normal standards such as A4, or A6 flyer already limit what you can design.

Printing techniques are creative opportunities.
An unexpected printing technique (or a combination of them) adds creativity to your design if used properly. Some examples in the portfolio .

A green project is a loved project.
In the age of sustainability, clients are happier with greener products.

Every penny counts.
Yes, printing on unused paper surfaces is cheaper than regular printing.

cheaper than regular printing

good surface makes expensive printing techniques affordable for small scale projects.

Have you ever wanted to use offset for your print job but have never been able to afford it? How about not being able to meet the minimum number of copies a print shop requires for that expensive technique?

By printing on unused surfaces you can avoid these limitations, as your project ends up on the margin of large productions. We make sure our available surfaces include these high quality printing techniques, which we offer at an interesting price.

Optimising a paper sheet by selling unused surfaces is a profitable thing to do for a print shop, and we ask them to share part of this profit to make good surface an affordable printing service indeed. Depending on size and printing technique, you can save up to 30% of the printing cost for your project.

good surface is a printing service
made by and for people who care about the environment

Olivier Bertrand
olivier@goodsurface.xyz

Olivier Bertrand is a graphic designer and publisher, whose specialisation is page-based objects that are sometimes folded and sometimes not, digital or printed. At the same time, he develops a publishing research based on appropriations and misappropriations of leftover from regular production.

Piero Bisello

A graduate in philosophy and economics, Piero Bisello specialises in environmental ethics and economics. He occasionally plays with quirky graphic design projects and experimental poetry.

historic

Year 2015: a first unspoken agreement with the print shop Media Graphic in Rennes allows Oliver Bertrand to use a blank surface in the margins of their regular prints. Since that founding experience, exploiting unused print surfaces has been his special trick, and his publication La Perruque, an art magazine of typographic specimens born in April 2016, finds its raison d'être precisely in this signature production method.

A year after La Perruque was born, this production method is once again tested with a new project; the publishing house Surfaces Utiles. Together with his accomplices Chloé Bernhardt and Justin Bihan, Olivier positions the publishing house around the leftover from the printing industry, building up a collective project that follows the requirements of manufacture quality and innovative working techniques. Over the months, Surface Utiles strikes a number of deals with print shops and other suppliers, which make available their unused materials so they are turned into books instead of waste.

It is within this experimental dynamic, and from a new focus on the environmental benefits of waste reduction that Good Surface emerges.

Today, Olivier Bertrand and Piero Bisello make up good surface, a platform that shares vacant print surfaces from print shops with a wider community of designers, artists, and publishers.
